Green Tea Leaves

Green Tea Facts- It's widely known that green tea is healthy - but not so well-known is what makes it so good for us.

Green tea is made up of powerful antioxidants. that protect cells against damage caused by free radicals.

Free radicals contribute to aging and are thought to be the cause of several diseases.

Antioxidants work by stabilising free radicals before they cause harm. The antioxidants in green tea help to maintain healthy cells and tissues in the body. This is why green tea is so frequently used in antiaging skincare products today. And it's also why green tea has been reported as one of the most affordable ways to prevent aging and disease.

Green tea also contains Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a major catechin found in green tea.

EGCG is thought to interact with enzyme systems in the body, inhibiting destructive chemical reactions in our bodies that lead to disease. EGCG has been shown to protect DNA from ultraviolet damage.

It has also been suggested that EGCG may be effective in promoting weight loss. EGCG fights fat by increasing the rate of energy expenditure and fat burning through a process of thermogenesis.

EGCG is said to have 25 to 100 times the potency of Vitamins C & E.

One cup of green tea supplies 20-35milligrams of EGCG. Link - Find out why green tea is healthier than black tea.

Green tea contains theanine an amino acid said to promote relaxation without drowsiness.

Theanine has been reported to directly stimulate the production of alpha brain waves, which are linked with deep states of relaxation and enhanced mental clarity.

In a recent study, Japanese researchers also stated that as well as promoting relaxation, theanine may also result in healthy blood pressure levels, improve concentration and learning, promote mental clarity and strengthen the body's immune system.

Theanine makes up 1-2% of the dry weight of green tea leaves.

Green tea does contain caffeine, but considerably less than a regular cup of brewed coffee. The caffeine content of an 8 ounce (240mls) cup of green tea is approximately 30mg, compared to approximately 100mg in a brewed cup of coffee of the same quantity.

This means you can drink more green tea, without the side effects of too much caffeine, such as anxiety and nervousness.

It is a commonly known that caffeine stimulates the nervous system, boosting alertness and relieving fatigue.

Decaffeinated green tea is available in many places, but be aware that the process of removing the caffeine, affects the taste, and also oftens removes much of the health benefits-such as the polyhenolic content. Want to find out more about the caffeine in green tea - click here.
