Green Tea Weight Loss Research

Does Green Tea Help Lose Weight

Green tea weight loss research has been rather limited, and the majority of links between green tea and weight loss largely rest on the conclusions of a small research study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in Dec.1999.

In this study the weight loss benefits of two of the major components of green tea: caffeine and epigallocatechin (egcg) were investigated.

Ten healthy Japanese males ingested 50mg caffeine and 90mg of egcg at breakfast, lunch and dinner over a 12 week period. The scientists investigated the link between caffeine and egcg’s role in body fat reduction. The participants experienced a 4% increase in their metabolic rate in a 24 hour period.

Conclusions from this study

The conclusion from this green tea weight loss research study was that green tea “promotes fat oxidation” and …”may play a role in the control of body composition”.

This green tea weight loss research study was too limited, and further clinical studies (on overweight/obese individuals) needs to be done, before green tea can be proven to be a weight loss remedy.

What about green tea diet pills and patches?

The public has been bombarded by green tea diet pills and patches in recent years. Government bodies have taken legal action against certain companies touting false dietary claims with regard to green tea pills and patches. There are also doubts about the false labeling of the ingredients in these products.

Proven Green Tea Health Benefits

One thing is certain- a cup of freshly brewed tea is completely natural, and tastes delicious.It is also calorie-free, which means you can drink as much as you like.

While it is quite likely that green tea contains beneficial weight loss properties, it is yet to be proven as the definative answer to weight loss.

Extensive research has been done on its other health benefits, such as its anti-aging benefits, and disease preventative benefits.

So you can be sure that you will reap a range of health benefits if you incorporate green tea into your lifestyle.
