Green Tea Weight Loss

Healthy women running

Green Tea Weight Loss studies and research is in the spotlight, as more people look for evidence that green tea=weight loss.

Results from studies in recent years have shown that daily consumption of green tea may promote weight loss.

How Does Green Tea Help Weight Loss?

Scientists have suggested that the key ingredient that assists in green tea weight loss is the high concentration of polyphenols known as catechins.

One cup of tea contains on average 80-100 milligrams of polyphenols.

The most abundant polyphenol in green tea is epigallocatechin-3-gallate (or EGCG). One cup of green tea supplies 20-35 milligrams of EGCG.

It is thought that EGCG fights fat effectively by increasing the rate of energy expenditure and fat burning.

Results of a study conducted by scientists in Japan (and published in the January 2005 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition), concluded that daily consumption of tea high in catechins-such as green tea,"might be useful in the prevention and improvement of lifestyle-related diseases, mainly obesity".

Another study conducted by the University of Chicago (and published on their website in 2000) discovered that rats injected with EGCG experienced a loss of appetite and consumed 60% less food after daily injections of EGCG for 7 days.

When the rats were given the EGCG orally, the effect was weakened. However, scientists suggested "oral consumption may mimic some of the results obtained with injection" of EGCG.

More clinical studies need to be conducted before any conclusions can be made concerning green tea weight loss. The initial findings are promising, but limited in their scope.

Un-sweetened green tea can definately assist in weight loss, just by being a healthy sugar-free, fat-free and calorie-free alternative to other beverages on the market.

Green tea can be drunk all-year-round hot or cold. It will quench your thirst in the summer, and give you warmth in the winter months!
